Attackers linked to Scattered Spider and ShinyHunters used social engineering to access a third-party Salesforce database, exposing names, Social Security numbers and other personal data.

Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America, a U.S. subsidiary of German insurer Allianz SE, disclosed in late July 2025 that a threat actor had gained unauthorized access to a third-party, cloud-based customer relationship management (CRM) system. According to the company's notification, the intrusion occurred on July 16, 2025, when an attacker used a social engineering technique to gain access rather than exploiting a software vulnerability. Allianz Life said the attacker was able to obtain personal information related to "the majority" of its customers, financial professionals, and a smaller number of employees before the access was cut off.
The incident is one of dozens of breaches tied to a broader 2025 campaign targeting organizations that store customer data in Salesforce-hosted CRM environments. Security researchers have attributed the wider campaign to threat actors associated with Scattered Spider and ShinyHunters — also tracked by some researchers under the identifier UNC6040 — two English-speaking cybercrime groups whose tactics and members have increasingly overlapped throughout 2025.
In its filing with the Maine Attorney General's office, Allianz Life reported that a total of 1,497,036 individuals were affected — a figure that rose from an initial estimate closer to 1.1 million as the company's investigation progressed. Some security researchers and outlets covering the leaked data separately reported that the stolen dataset contained as many as 2.8 million individual records once duplicate and related entries (such as multiple records tied to the same policyholder or beneficiary) were accounted for.
The categories of data exposed included:
Allianz Life stated that its core policy administration systems were not affected and that the compromised data resided specifically in the third-party CRM platform used for customer relationship management rather than in systems that process claims or payments.
Investigators believe the intrusion followed a pattern that has become common across the 2025 wave of Salesforce-linked breaches: attackers impersonated IT staff or used voice-phishing (vishing) calls to trick employees or contractors into approving a malicious connected application, or into providing credentials and multi-factor authentication approvals that allowed the attacker to link a rogue OAuth application to the company's Salesforce environment. Once connected, that access allowed the attackers to query and export large volumes of customer data directly from the CRM using legitimate data-export tooling, which can make the activity harder to distinguish from normal administrative use in the short term.
Allianz Life is one of a growing list of companies confirmed to have been targeted in this campaign, alongside other major brands whose Salesforce environments were compromised through similar social-engineering methods during the same period. The consistency of the technique across victims — targeting people rather than software flaws — has been a central theme in security researchers' warnings about the campaign.
After detecting the unauthorized access, Allianz Life said it moved to contain the incident, engaged outside cybersecurity forensic experts, and notified federal law enforcement, including the FBI. The company began notifying affected individuals by mail starting August 1, 2025, and filed the required breach notifications with state regulators, including Maine's Attorney General, as part of its legal disclosure obligations.
For affected customers, Allianz Life's response included:
The disclosure also triggered legal fallout typical of large-scale U.S. breaches: multiple law firms announced investigations into potential class action claims against Allianz Life on behalf of affected customers and financial professionals in the weeks following the notification, citing the sensitivity of the exposed Social Security numbers and the company's handling of third-party vendor access.
Security researchers who reviewed the incident afterward pointed to broader lessons for any organization relying on Salesforce or similar SaaS CRM platforms:
Allianz Life's experience became one of the most closely watched cases in the 2025 Salesforce breach wave both for the volume of Social Security numbers involved and for illustrating how a single compromised employee interaction — rather than a technical exploit — can expose data belonging to well over a million people.
